Holidays

A challenge:

Without researching, tell me what you know about the real lives of the people we have "holidays" for in the US...

- St. Nicholas
- St. Patrick
- St. Valentine

Oh, St Patrick's Day is my favorite holiday because of what an amazing story he has! And while I hate what Valentine's day represents, St Valentine was a cool guy. I'm afraid I'm not recalling much in the way of St Nicholas.

Patrick was not from Ireland. He was kidnapped (by pirates!) as a boy and taken to Ireland to be a slave. At one point God told him to walk across Ireland, and that there would be a boat waiting for him. He ended up going back to the mainland of Europe and (I think) went to seminary. He later went back to Ireland to evangelize, and he started many monasteries.

Valentine I remember fewer details about, but what I recall is something like this: the ruler of the day was getting frustrated that his soldiers didn't want to fight because they wanted to be home with their families, so he forbade anyone to perform marriage ceremonies. Valentine preached the gospel, and in accordance with that he continued to perform marriages.

Good comment brenda. yeah, I think valentino did much better things than buying chocolate, red hearts, and tricking people into having a one night stand with him.

But St. Patrick's heart I believe would be grieved if he knew we celebrate his life by drinking a large amount of alcohol. What a perversion of the gospel message...
